The Essential Capsule Starter Guide
A 10-piece capsule for men and women
A complimentary service. The method is shared. The ten slots are shared. Under each slot, a men's cut and a women's cut, so you can follow the column that matches how you dress.
Complimentary service. No charge.

Who it is for
Written for both wardrobes
If you wear a shirt and trousers to work, if you wear a blouse and a midi, if you mix both, this archive still holds. Quiet luxury is proportion, fabric, and repetition. It is not a men's lookbook with a blouse added later, and it is not a women's lookbook that ignores a tailored coat.
Read the men's notes if that is how you dress most days. Read the women's notes if that is how you dress most days. Read both if your closet already sits between them.
The three tests
Every piece, on every body
- 01
Proportion
It holds a clean line on the body you have, not the body a campaign photographed. Shoulder, waist, and hem are judged on you.
- 02
Repeat
You can wear it three distinct ways with the other nine.
- 03
Longevity
The cut will still read as current in five years. Logos, novelty collars, and seasonal color stories stay out.
The 10-piece capsule
Ten slots, two expressions
Follow the column that matches how you dress. Borrow from the other whenever the piece actually fits and can be worn three ways.
- 01
The white shirt
For men
Crisp cotton oxford or poplin. Point, button-down, or soft spread collar. Tucked into the trouser. Shoulders sit on the bone.
For women
Crisp cotton or cotton-silk. Point or soft spread collar. Tucked, half-tucked, or open over a knit. It should not pull across the bust.
Shared. White or ivory only. Dense enough that you cannot see a hand through it in daylight.
- 02
The fine knit
For men
Ivory or camel crewneck. Cashmere or extra-fine merino. Close through the body, not slouchy, not gym-weight.
For women
Ivory or camel crewneck or a fine turtleneck. Same cloth. Close through the body, not an oversized slouch.
Shared. The piece you reach for when the shirt feels too formal.
- 03
The second knit
For men
A slightly heavier gauge, in charcoal or navy. Over the shirt, or instead of the blazer on quieter days.
For women
The same: heavier gauge, charcoal or navy, over the shirt or in place of the jacket.
Shared. A different value from the fine knit so the two do not photograph as twins.
- 04
The tailored jacket
For men
Charcoal or navy blazer. Soft shoulder, two-button, hip length. Closes without strain. Avoid shiny synthetics and a boxy cut.
For women
Charcoal or navy blazer, same rules. Avoid an oversized boyfriend cut that hides your shoulder. A structured knit jacket can stand in if it holds a line.
Shared. This is structure. If it looks like a cardigan from ten feet, it is not this slot.
- 05
The wool coat
For men
Camel or charcoal. Single-breasted overcoat, mid-thigh to just below the knee. Cheap coating looks cheap immediately.
For women
Camel or charcoal. Single-breasted, mid-thigh to just above the knee. A wrap coat is allowed if the waist actually holds.
Shared. Tight felted wool, not fuzzy loft that mats. The one piece worth waiting to buy.
- 06
The dark trouser
For men
Navy or charcoal wool, or a wool blend with enough weight to hang. Full length, clean hem, a slight break on the shoe.
For women
Navy or charcoal wool or wool blend. Full length, clean hem. Tailored through the hip.
Shared. No crop that fights the loafer, no shine, no stretch that bags at the knee by Friday.
- 07
The second bottom
For men
A second trouser in a different value (stone, ivory, or mid-grey), or a clean dark jean with no distressing.
For women
A second trouser in a different value, a clean dark jean, or a tailored midi skirt in wool or crepe if it combines three ways.
Shared. Contrast against the dark trouser, not another navy.
- 08
The second top
For men
A merino or heavy pique polo, or a second dress shirt in pale blue or ivory. Replaces the white shirt after hours.
For women
A silk or crepe blouse in ivory or black. Replaces the white shirt after six, or under the blazer for less structure.
Shared. A woman may use a polo. A man may use a fine knit polo. The point is a second top, not a costume.
- 09
The leather shoe
For men
Black or dark brown loafer or oxford. Almond toe, low heel or none. Polished, not chunky.
For women
Black or dark brown loafer, or a low closed pump. Almond toe, low heel or none.
Shared. One pair in the ten. Sneakers, boots, and sandals live outside the archive.
- 10
The structured bag
For men
Leather tote or slim briefcase, unlogoed, large enough for a laptop.
For women
Structured leather tote, unlogoed, large enough for a laptop and a knit.
Shared. Structure at the hand finishes the ten. Soft slouchy bags collapse the silhouette.
How the ten combine
Four looks, no eleventh piece
Men's weekday
White shirt, dark trouser, loafer or oxford, bag.
Women's weekday
White shirt or blouse, dark trouser, loafer, tote.
Weekend, both
Fine knit, second bottom, leather shoe.
Dinner, both
Second top, jacket, dark trouser, leather shoe. Coat over all three.

Fabrics that last
The same cloth rules, both columns
- Cotton poplin, twill, or oxford for shirts. Oxford is the usual men's white shirt. Poplin or cotton-silk is the usual women's. Either cloth is allowed if it is opaque.
- Cashmere or extra-fine merino for knits, and for a polo if that fills slot eight. 2-ply or more.
- Wool suiting, 250-320g, for trousers, jackets, and a tailored midi.
- Wool coating with a tight felted surface for the coat.
- Silk crepe or heavy silk twill for the blouse. Heavy pique or merino for a polo.
- Full-grain leather for shoes and the bag.
Walk away from
- High-stretch synthetics that shine under indoor light
- Distressed denim, coated denim, and whiskering
- Open-knit slub sweaters that lose their shape
- Vinyl sold as leather
- Loud logos and novelty hardware
- Boyfriend or girlfriend cuts sold as a gender shortcut instead of a fit

Questions
FAQs for men and women
This page exists so no one has to guess. The guide is for both.
Is this guide for men or for women?
Both. It is not a men's archive with a blouse added at the end, and it is not a women's archive that ignores a tailored coat. Every silhouette has a men's note and a women's note. Follow the column that matches how you dress most days, or mix slots. You still only get ten pieces.
Why not one unisex list?
A single list pretends a polo and a silk blouse are the same garment. They are not. They can fill the same slot, the second top, because they do the same job: they replace the white shirt after hours. Naming both cuts is more honest than forcing one gender-neutral item that fits nobody well.
Do I have to follow only one column?
No. A woman may wear the oxford, the briefcase, and the polo. A man may wear the fine turtleneck and the tote. The three tests do not change: proportion on your body, three combinations with the other nine, cloth that lasts.
What if I wear skirts or dresses?
A tailored midi in wool or crepe can fill the second-bottom slot if it combines three ways. A dress does not fill a slot in this starter. Dresses can live outside the ten. Still build the ten so you have work, travel, and weekend coverage that is not a dress.
What if I never wear a blazer?
Then the jacket slot is still empty. A heavy knit is not a jacket. A chore coat is not a jacket unless it holds a clean shoulder and closes without strain. Most people discover they needed the jacket once the rest of the ten is honest.
What if I do not wear loafers?
The shoe slot is a leather loafer, oxford, or low closed pump. Sneakers, boots, and sandals can live outside the archive. They do not fill the slot.
Does body type change the ten?
It changes fit, not the slots. Buy for the body you have today. Do not buy a size you plan to become, and do not buy a men's small or women's large as a shortcut around proportion.
I live somewhere hot. Does the ten still work?
Yes. Choose lighter weights of the same silhouettes: tropical wool, linen-cotton if it is still opaque, an unlined jacket. A blank coat slot is allowed if you have no winter. Do not replace the coat with a fifth knit.
I live somewhere cold. Does the ten still work?
Yes. The coat becomes non-negotiable. Merino base layers can live outside the ten. Do not add parkas, puffers, and three extra knits into the archive. The archive is ten. The closet may hold weather gear.
Is this only luxury brands?
No. The tests are cut, cloth, and repetition. A well-cut unbranded wool trouser beats a logo knit that pills. Wait on the coat rather than filling the slot with something shiny.
I am on a tight budget. Where do I start?
Audit first. Most people already own four to seven of the ten. Fill one blank at a time, fabric first. Second-hand wool and leather are often better than new synthetics. Do not buy a matching his-and-hers set.
Is this complimentary?
Yes. The Essential Capsule Starter Guide is a complimentary service. There is no charge. Claim access and the guide opens in your account.
Can two people share this?
The method can be used by more than one person. Each person still builds their own ten. A jacket that fits one body will not fit the other by wishing.
How is this different from The Complete Wardrobe Suite?
This starter is complimentary: the ten silhouettes, fabric rules, an audit, and these FAQs. The Suite is the paid collection: the Core Wardrobe Playbook, fit notes in depth, and the visual decks. Both are written for men and for women.
Do accessories count in the ten?
No. A scarf, belt, earrings, watch, or tie can finish a look. They cannot replace a missing shirt, jacket, or shoe.
What if I already have more than ten good pieces?
Keep them in the closet if you want. Only ten enter the archive. If two jackets both pass the tests, keep the one you actually wore in the last 60 days.
I am between sizes, or my body is changing.
Build the ten for the body you dress this month. Loose just-in-case pieces fail the proportion test. When the body changes, re-run the audit and replace lines.
Is quiet luxury only neutrals, and only for one gender?
No. Ivory, camel, navy, charcoal, and black are a closed palette so the ten combine. One muted accent is allowed if it appears twice. The palette is architecture, not a gender code.
Will one column make me look boring or conservative?
The goal is repetition that looks considered. If a piece bores you after three wears, it failed the repeat test. If a piece only works as a statement, it failed longevity. Gender is not the variable. The variable is whether you will wear it on a Tuesday.
